Effective Lightweight Design through an Intelligent Mix of Materials

A vehicle bodyshell in the form of an innovative hybrid lightweight construction with a large proportion of fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP). The design includes an intelligent mixture of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP), aluminum and high-strength steels, all of which leads to a substantial reduction in weight, while at the same time significantly improving safety. The vehicle’s high-strength structure with crash-responsive protection systems inside the doors makes it possible to eliminate the B-pillar and use full gull-wing doors, which provide easy access to the four seats. The Mercedes-Benz safety philosophy, and in particular the guiding principle of a rigid passenger cell developed by Béla Barényi in 1952, have thus been consistently further refined in line with future mobility requirements.
